The Hanson Lab is thrilled to celebrate Dr. Jose Lombana, who has successfully completed his Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Maureen Hanson and the close mentorship of Dr. Stephane Bentolila! Jose’s dissertation explored how plant cells edit and correct genetic messages within chloroplasts and mitochondria—a process essential for making healthy proteins. Using a simplified bacterial system, Jose helped uncover how several key proteins work together to carry out this editing process with remarkable precision, work that was published in Nucleic Acids Research. He also developed advanced skills in protein purification and analysis, providing new insights into how these editing machines are built and function, which will be described in a future publication.
